The Society's new book Bewick Studies will also be launched. This leaflet, produced with a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund Awards for All scheme, will be officially launched and distributed to all the local libraries and Tourist Offices. May 15 th - The London Lecture: Thomas Bewick and Black Beauty . Charles Bird, the Society's London Secretary will speak on the subject of Thomas Bewick and Black Beauty. Members attending are invited to bring along any interesting Bewick items from their collections for discussion after the lecture, if they so wish. June 10 th - Annual General Meeting at the Literary and Philosophical Society Official business will be kept to a proper minimum, and then John Gall of Beamish Museum will talk on the interesting topic Early Industry and Engraving on Tyneside . August 8th - 251 st Birthday Visit to Cherryburn, Thomas Bewick's Birthplace An occasion to gather and celebrate Bewick's birthday. In August 1753 I was born states Bewick in his Memoir but gives no date, some biographers believed that he was born on the 10th or 11th of August, but the 12th was the actual date which he always celebrated. November 2004 - The Newcastle Lecture The Frightened Hare: Thomas Bewick and the protection of animals. Charles Bird, the Society's London Secretary has kindly agreed to speak on the influence Thomas Bewick, his writing and illustrations, has had on early animal welfare. Monday May 3rd - May Day celebrations at Cherryburn A day of traditional music, Maypole dancing and a best dressed May King or Queen competition from 1 pm - 5.30pm. Sunday 4th July - Teddy Bears Picnic Bring your picnic and favourite teddy, listen to a storyteller from 1pm – 4.30pm Cherryburn Folk in the Farmyard Every Sunday afternoon there is traditional music, song or dance from 2pm-5pm.
