A list of the main Bewick collectionsFor more information click the title links
The Bewick Society has been compiling a list of the main collections and sites of Thomas Bewick works and engravings. This is by no means an exhaustive catalogue but it does cover the most important work available to the general public, principally in the United Kingdom and the USA.
Further information to add to this list would be welcomed.
Bewick Resources in the NorthEast of England
There is a wealth of Bewick material in the region to access and enjoy, and it is hoped that this listing will assist the researcher or browser into Bewick’s world.
The icon used here is a vignette from the titlepage of The Fables of Aesop. It shows a view of Newcastle seen from the south side of the River Tyne.
Bewick Collections in the UK
The main collections of Bewick related material beyond the North-East of England are in London at the British Library and the Victoria & Albert Museum.
Bewick Collections abroad
The main source of Bewick material outside the United Kingdom is the United States of America, followed by Canada. On this page you will find a brief account of these resources and links to their sites.
Bewick Resources on the World Wide Web
There are in fact many Bewick websites to be found by using any of the proprietary search engines. This page shows a selection with the links ready made for you to go straight there.
The icon used here is a tailpiece vignette from The Fables of Aesop, p.76; beneath it is a legend in a facsimile of Bewick’s handwriting: ‘Tis a world! floating about, like an illumined mote, in the immensity of endless space and is inhabited by Nations of proud Pismires.’
